The village has some good accom-modations for visitors and the surrounding country has many attractions. At thispoint during the war a sanguinary skirmish took place, in which the troops on bothsides were for the most part East Tennesseeans. Is the county seat of Washington county, the oldest county in the state—1877 wasits centennial year. Killebrew, State Geologist, says of it : It was first settled bypioneers from Virginia, who supposed the country to be within the limits of the OldDominion. They named their county in honor of a rising young surveyor andmilitia officer, Colonel Washington. This Virginia Colonel afterward became theleader of the American Colonists in the Revolution, but this county attests theappreciation of his early friends for his virtues long before he became first in thehearts of his countrymen.
