He commanded the forces South ofTrent in the first Bishops War, 1639, and the whole army in thesecond Bishops War, 1640, but his health obliged him to quit the the Short Parliament, and at the opening of the Long Parhament,he represented moderation and conciliation, but gradually went overto the Opposition ; and the Commons, who were thankful to havecaught so big a fish, loaded him with praise and with offices which itdid not need much active energy to execute. On every occasion oftreaties for peace, at Colnbrook, at Oxford, at Uxbridge, and atNewport, Northumberland was spokesman of Parliament to theKing. Thou
