Satellite image of the South Korea oil spill (black swirls, lower centre) covering the coastal waters of the Yellow Sea, southwest of Seoul, Korea. Over 10,000 tonnes of oil spilled into the sea when a tanker, the Hebei Spirit, collided with another vessel on 7th December 2007. This is South Korea's worst ever spill; twice as large as the previous largest in 1995. The main concern of an oil spill of this magnitude is the long-term ecological impact on the region, which is home to a designated national maritime park and areas of wetland important for migrating birds. This image was acquired on 11th December 2007 by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) aboard ESA's Envisat satellite.
