Genoa historical of St. George.

The first document confirming the existence of the church dates back to 947. To it follows in 964, year III of the reign of Ottone I in Italy, a parchment that names the chapel of Saint George relatively to the exchange of goods between Eldeprando, son of Zangulfo , and Theodolfo bishop of Genoa. Of January 1139 is an act of donation made in the church of San Giorgio by the consuls to the sons of Rolando and Guidone da Paxano (from Passano). According to it we think the church was collegiate and not just a chapel or basilica. Siro II Porcello, who became the first archbishop of Genoa in 1132 (the Genoese bishopric was erected in the metropolitan see in 1132-1138), in 1143 he had the register of the Archbishop's Curia compiled. In the early Middle Ages the minor churches were generally oratories or basilicas and the layout of Siro Porcello transformed those dependent on the cathedral into parishes. The office granted to the parish priests passed from the approval of the bishop and his canons, called "cardinales", "de cardine" or "cardines". The same passage in the Diocese takes place with the churches subordinate to the parish churches. The parishes then acquire a chapter of canons with a provost at their head. The heads of the seven city churches were elected by the archbishops, who also had the appointment of the abbots of Santo Stefano, San Siro, San Benigno. Read more: (Genova)
