The population of Davenport is now about 20, account of its being built on a declivity the drainageis perfect. It is surrounded by a most fertile countryand possesses every element for the growth of a largecity. Recrossingthe magnificent bridge spanning the riverbetween Davenport and the Illinois shores, I foundmyself on Rock Island. The Island lies to the northof the city, the latter not being located on the Islandbut on the mainland of Illinois. Since 1804 theIsland proper has been the property of the UnitedStates Government, although not occupied until 1812,on the breaking out of the war with England.
