As Irving was the father of Americanliterature, so this society was the pioneer in the field of literaryendeavor at Purdue. Irving Society at once became a factor inthe affairs of the University, and was granted the use of the com-modious quarters in University Hall, in which it still holds itsweekly meetings. By 1878 the enrollment in Irving Society becameso large and unwieldly that it became necessary to divide its num-ber and form a new and henceforth rival society, the have continued their work to the present day, and inciden-tally it may be said, have maintained a spirit of wholesome X. BOOTH TARKIXGTOX. X. Booth Tarkington, of Indian-apolis, the Hoosier novelist, receivesthe loyal homage of the IrvingSociety in recognition of the achieve-ments he has made in the literaryworld. As a contemporary and co-worker of George Ade in the affairsof Irving Society during his studentdays, and as one who has subse-quently become a realization to thefullest measure of its ideals andpurposes, we pay this tribute.
