Still waters of the Hennepin Canal reflect the trees along its banks as it flows through a rural section of northwestern Illinois. The Hennepin Canal State Trail, also just called the Hennepin Canal, is an abandoned waterway in northwest Illinois, between the Mississippi River at Rock Island and the Illinois River near Hennepin. The entire canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The canal trail provides a recreational route and fishing through out its course. The first boat traveled on the canal in 1907, however, it became obsolete by the time it opened and by the 1930s it was used mostly for recreational purposes.
