Friend of many yearsWibose sympathyCrowns all my efforts PREFACEPi ^HE purpose of this book is to give music-loversand young musical students a more intimateacquaintance with the Symphony Orchestraand its instruments than they, perhaps, possess. The instruments are described one by one; and, finally, the Orchestra, which is, itself, treated as aninstrument on which the Conductor may be said toplay. Attention should be called to the description of LuIIysfamous Orchestra and to the interesting group of artistswho played in it, such as Descoteaux, the tulip-fancier,described by La Bruyere in his Caracteres, and MarinMarais, one of the greatest virtuosi of the SeventeenthCentury. It is often said that the virtuoso-conductor did notappear until the Nineteenth Century.
