Tibetan New Year at Boudhanath Kathmandu Nepal

Lhosar is the Tibetan new year and is usually celebrated in February This shot was taken in 2006 at Boudhanath or Bodhanath a world heritage site and one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world This is the courtyard of Samtenling monastery next to the stupa and the Tibetan crowd of locals and monks have all just thrown handfuls of tsampa flour into the air The intense sun has blown out the highlights and reflected off the particles of flour giving a surreal abstract feel which captures the happiness of the moment The image has also been given a sepia tint to give it a timeless quality This was shot from a balcony looking down on the happy faces and was quite an uplifting moment especially given the recent history of the Tibetan people and their oppression by the Chinese This was a moment of pure joy and celebration
