Tongue section. Light micrograph of a vertical section through a mammalian tongue. At top, the surface is covered with circumvallate papillae. The upper layer of the papillae is stratified epithelium (red). The troughs between the papillae are where tasting takes place by the taste buds (oval, light pink). Most of this image shows interlacing bundles of muscles (some running vertically), between which are mucous glands (one at bottom left). Magnification: x195 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
