The iconic Kelpies maquettes sculptures in Kelso, Scottish Borders, May 2015

The iconic Kelpies sculptures are coming to the Scottish Borders in May. The one-tenth scale touring sculptures will be on display in Kelso Square from Friday 15 May to Monday 18 May. This follows agreement by the three Kelso and District councillors to use a small amount of ‘Quality of Life’ funding to cover the costs involved. The visit coincides with the Floors Castle Horse Trials and the Border Vintage Agricultural Association’s annual rally at Springwood Park, both on the edge of the town. Councillors Tom Weatherston, Alec Nicol and Simon Mountford “Being able to bring the Kelpies Maquettes to Kelso is a real coup for the town and we are sure that the sculptures will contribute to a significant increase in footfall in the town centre over the weekend. They will be quite a spectacle, which we hope people from far and wide will come and take in. “Having the Kelpies in front of the Town Hall on these dates will also make the most of having large numbers of visitors at Springwood Park and Floors too. Hopefully the combination of these three great attractions will be a major boost to our local traders.” Sculptures The three metre high artworks, hand crafted by renowned Scottish sculptor Andy Scott, were made as models to create the world’s largest equine sculpture, The Kelpies, which is the centrepiece of the new 350 hectare Helix Park in Falkirk and forms a dramatic gateway to the new section of the Forth and Clyde Canal. The sculptures have been touring the United States and have also appeared closer to home at the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and at the Grand National at Aintree. The Kelpies Maquettes are being loaned by us from Falkirk Council. The only costs are connected with transport and security.
