Thischaritable association, like theearlier monasteries, received gen-erous gifts of land in westernEurope and built and controlledmany fortified monasteries in theHoly Land itself. After the evacu-ation of Syria in the thirteenthcentury, the Hospitalers movedtheir headquarters to the island ofRhodes, and later to Malta. Theorder still exists, and it is considered a distinction to this day tohave the privilege of wearing its emblem, the cross of Malta. Before the Hospitalers were transformed into a militaryorder, a little group of French knights banded together in 1119. Fig. 47.
