This beautiful and well known eastern Oriolecan readily be identified by its orange flamicolor and entirely black head. Even betteiknown than tlie birds, are tlie pensile nestswhich retain their positions on the swayingdrooping branches alltlirougli the winter. Al-though they build inmany other trees, elmaseem to be their tavoi-ites. Their nests aremade-of plant fibres andfrequently string, andWhitf often reach a length ol about 10 inches andabout half that in diameter;* they are usuallyattached to drooping branches by the rim sothat they rock to and fro, but are sometimesheld more firmly in position by having theirside bound to a branch. Their eggs, which arelaid in May and June, are white, streaked andlined with blackish brown and grayish. 321
