Stegosaurus dinosaur, illustration. This herbivorous dinosaur lived about 150 million years ago in the Late Jurassic. Fossils have been found in Europe and the USA. It reached up to 9 metres long. The distinctive broad plates running in two rows along its back are thought to have helped control body temperature by radiating or absorbing heat. Stegosaurus defended itself with the long spikes on its tail. It had a tiny brain in relation to its size.
