Traditional old British Customs,Festivities and events - Well-dressing tradition on Holy Thursday at Tissington, Derbyshire, UK - 1852 . Tissington claims to be the mother place of all well dressing ceremonies, though the event occurs all over Derbyshire and indeed elsewhere. The annual well dressing ceremony draws visitors from across Britain and abroad. Its Pagan origins are lost in history but are believed to have originally had the intention of thanking or placating the water gods or spirits who supplied the local water supply ( the town wells)
