5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (Sept. 20, 2017) Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Keki Smith, a native of Portsmouth, Virginia, assigned to the weapons department aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), prepares M9 service pistol magazines before conducting a live fire exercise in the hangar bay. America is the flagship for the America Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the 5th Fleet area of operations.
