VICTORIA (Xeo-Lat., named in honor ofVictoria, Queen of England). A genus of plantsof the natural order Nymphoeaccf, resemblingthe common water-lily. Only one species isknown, Victoria regia. This is said to have beenfirst observed by Hiinke. about 1801. but was notdescribed until 1832, when Piippig found it inthe river Amazon. It is foinid in other waters ofXorthern South America. Its floating leaves areorbicular and attain a diameter of 5 to 6 feet; havethe margin turned up about two inches, are pur-. They are more thana foot in diameter, white, internally rose-colored,and are very fragrant. The fruit is a capsule,almost globose, with a depression on the top,about half the size of a mans head, fleshywithin, and divided into numerous cells, full ofround farinaceous seeds, which are an agreeablearticle of food. The plant is called mais delagua, or water maize, in some parts of SouthAmerica. To the cultivation of the plant specialhot-houses have been devoted in some places inthe United States and in Europe.
