Fort St. James, onLake Stuart, was made the chief trading point in theNew Caledonia district, and Francis Ermatinger, ofKamloops, was made chief factor. Fort Nisqually, at the head of Puget Sound, on abroad plain commanding a wide prospect, was builtand equipped for a permanent and important fort,as it subsequently became.
