Edith Cavell (1865-1915), British nurse. Cavell was running a nursing school in Brussels when the First World War (1914-1918) broke out. Although visiting England at the time, she returned to Brussels where her hospital became a Red Cross Hospital and she treated soldiers from both sides. In late 1914 Brussels was occupied by the Germans and many allied service men were stuck behind enemy lines. Cavell helped nearly 200 Allied men to escape Belgium, hiding them in safe houses and giving them money and guides. The Germans arrested Cavell for this on the 3rd August 1915. She confessed and was sentenced to death by firing squad. She was executed on the 12th October 1915.
