The proper use of tlie file in the 81oy<:l work is very diffi-cult to master. Tlie file should he i)ushed from the hody, never pulled towards it. It is likewise necessary to guardagainst allowing- the file to roll or wahhle, as the surfaceAvorked upon will l)ecome true only when the file is graspedfirmly hy the handle, and pushed forward with a raj^id, steadystroke. It should then be lifted from the wood and placed inits original position. Be careful not to press too heavily uponthe wood, as the teeth of the file will then become dull veryrapidly. The grooves between the cutting edges should becleaned from time to time. 182 NAAS MODEL SERIES Model No. Bucket of W. Heii///t, 7\i in., or 20 cm. Diameter, Si% in., or 21 cm. 1. Saw out all the parts with rip and cross-cut saw. Plane face, edge, and ends of eachstave at right angles with jack and try-plane. 2, Draw on both ends of each stave a curved FUNDAMENTAL SERIES 183 line, which is to guide in the planing down, inorder to produce the inner concave surface ofeach stave. Form the concave surface with jackand round-plane. 3. Gauge the thickness of each stave alongthe edges. Draw on both ends the curved lineto guide for making the convex surface. Finishto the lines with hand ax, jack, and smoothing-plane. 4. Outline diagram of the bottom as in draw-ing 1 (/>) with compass. Gauge the thicknessand plane down. Bring out the form with framecompass saw and spokeshave. 5. The inclination of edges of the staves ismarked out with bevel and markin
