Florence, Tuscany, Italy: green dome of the Great Synagogue of Florence or Tempio Maggiore Israelitico di Firenze and terracotta tiled of dome of Florence Cathedral or the Duomo di Firenze. The cathedral dome was built between 1420 and 1436 to a plan by Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 - 1446), it is the largest masonry vault in the world with an external diameter of metres ( feet) and an interior diameter of metres (149 feet). Jewish emancipation was recognised by the Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 and construction of the Great Synagogue of Florence was begun in 1870. It was located far from the old ghetto, in a space close to the city walls previously occupied by orchards and gardens, and was built in the exotic Moresque style, combining elements of Arab, Romanesque and Byzantine art. It opened in 1882.
