The human foetus during the 9th week of development, showing the umbilical cord connecting the foetus with the placenta (the blood vessels of which are seen radiating from the point of attachment in the background). During this time there is rapid growth & weight increase. Facial feautures are developing; the eyes have migrated inward from the sides of the head, which is large with a bulging forehead. Upper limbs are differentiated into forearms, wrists & fingers; the lower limbs progress at a slower rate. The liver is functioning, enlarged due to production of red blood cells until the bone marrow takes over, & sexual differentiation has occurred.
