The Trout Lily is a very common spring wildflower. Its leaves, which are easily recognized by there mottled appearance, give the flower its name as they resemble the spots of a brook or brown trout. It is also sometimes known as the Dogtooth Violet, named so due to the shape of the root. Not a very fitting name considering it doesn't belong to the Violet family. It blooms from March through June and can be found in rich woods, often in fairly large colonies.
