Juvenile, Fledgling Woodstorks stand patiently at their nest waiting for a meal flight from their quite on their own

Wood storks can fledge at about 8 weeks of age. These young birds are fledglings and fully feathered. Even though they are big kids now, they still wait for parental meal flights at the end of the day. Young wood storks are particularly expressive and these young birds appear quite chatty and friendly. A wood stork family can consume about 448 pounds of fish in a breeding season so with wood storks, there is lots of fish beaks on nest everywhere. One thing to note with wood storks is how white their legs look. The legs are black with pink feet but the thick streaks of white on the legs are because they deposit urates (a mix of urine and feces) onto their legs for cooling. Not sure who was the first wood stork to come up with this great plan but they all do it. Black vultures do the same.
