THE VERGIN FOimTAriSr. This fountain is a large, deep, artificial cavity inthe hill-side, cut entirely in the solid rock. It isreached by a broad stone stairway of 26 steps. Tliewater is about 25 feet below the entrance on theliill-side, and some 10 or 15 feet below the bottomof the valley. The water is contained in a basin 15feet long by from 5 to 6 broad, and 7 feet usnal depth of the water is about 3 feet, thebottom of the basin being covered with pebbles, anaccumulation of dirt, and rubbish.
