Torbole sul Garda, close to the northern tip of the lake, was owned by the Venetian Republic from 1440 to 1510 before becoming an important port and customs post on the frontier of the Hapsburg Austrian Empire. The Casa or Casetta del Dazio, a picturesque customs or toll house built by Vienna in the early 1700s, still stands on the quay at the entrance to the harbour. Torbole, more recently a fishing village, is now an international water sports centre, with sailors, kiteboarders and windsurfers taking advantage of winds that blow up and down the northern reaches of the lake, at different times of day. The Ora south wind starts at noon and blows until the early evening, while the Peler north wind begins to blow before dawn and continues until late morning.
