It is somewhat difficult to place the infestation popularly knownby the above English names under any appropriate heading, as thevery common soft and carnivorous beetles are to be found on variouskinds of flowers, and the equally carnivorous larvae are also not limitedin their locality ; but some observation as to their beneficial habits inridding us of small vermin is needed, as they are too often credited (soto express it) with causing us much harm. In the present case theheading of Clover is perhaps as appropriate as any, as it will be seenthat the larvae sent me during the past season were from Wheat sownafter Clover ; and on reference I find one species of Telephorits larvahas been found so serviceable in destroying the maggots of a PlumWeevil in America, that very
