Its ajypearance and habits in the spring.—The date of the emergence of the little brown caterpillars from their winter retreats varies considerably in this state. They seem to time their ap- pearance by the date at which the buds begin to open. Thus the earliness or lateness of the season or of the variety of the tree in- fested will vary the time from two to four weeks, ranging from April 15 to May 15. In some cases the caterpillar appears before the bud has opened sufficiently for it to readily enter. It is then forced to eat its way into the bud. Once within the bud it revels in the very ten-.
