Water pollution. A pair of mute swans, Cygnus olor, nesting amongst domestic waste on polluted city water. Mute swans pair for life. The female usually lays 6-8 eggs that hatch after 35 days of incubation. In unpolluted water swans nest on a large mound of reeds; to survive in polluted city waters swans have to adapt and nest amongst the rubbish. Other causes of pollution to the lakes, rivers and reservoirs where swans and other wildlife live include agricultural run-off, discharge of industrial effluents, and acid rain. These can have a very detrimental effect on the ecology of an area. Photographed in Germany.
