Being energetic, enterprising and progressive,the many friends of these young gentlemen unhesitatingly predict forthem a useful and successful career. -9- lEYTESVlLLE, the county seat of Chariton county,and a Ijeautif ul and substantial city of enterprise, hap-py homes and cultured people, situated near the cen-tral part of the county, 101 miles east of Kansas Cityand 176 miles northwest of St. Louis, one and one-half miles north of the main line of the Wabashrailway with street railway connections, was orioinall}^laid out in 18P>0. James Keyte, an Englishman and aMethodist preacher, was the founder of the city, hehavincr purchased the land in 1830, and two years laterdonated fifty acres to the county, upon which, in 1833-34, the court-house and other public buildino-s were erected. Foreleven years prior to 1833, the county seat was located at Old Chari-ton, at that time a very promisino; village in the southern part of thecounty. The first court house l)uildino-, however, erected in the coun-ty, was built in Keytesville in 1832-33. This was a square shaped brickbuildino;, two stories hioh and contained four rooms, one )>elow
