Thus the Baffin Bay Elpidia must lie regarded as survivors from a time where there was a free connection between the two areas. This does not concern Elpidia alone, but also a number of other deep-sea echino- derms, e. g. Trochostoma boreale. In fact, the real deep-sea Echino- derms of Baffin Bay appear to be a community separated from its area of distribution in such a way that the present author regards it as a relict fauna. This may be a matter of opinion, and especially a matter of definition; what is, however, of the greatest interest is that these specimens do show slight differences from their allies in the Nowegian Sea and the North Atlantic, and apparently are developing into new species, better adopted to the physical conditions in the deeps of Baffin Bay. These are all typical specimens of Kolga hyalina and even the structure of the calcareous ring is identical in specimens from south of Jan Mayen and from Davis Strait. In 1032 Th.
