He was next placed at the head of the First Division of the Army of the East, where he took an active part in the operation of the debarkation, and in contributing powerfully to the success at [The Battle of the] Alma, where he received a wound; and at the Battle of Inkerman, on November 5, while heading the impetuous charge of the Zouaves, he had a horse killed under him, and was slightly wounded'.
