During the early part of the eighteenth cen-tury the Spanish colony came into conflict withthe English settlements along the coast. In 1702Governor Moore of South Carolina made a suc-cessful descent upon the town and carried awaymuch booty. In 1740 a considerable expeditionunder Governor Oglethorpe of Georgia invadedFlorida and laid siege to St. Augustine for twentydays. But the fort was now strong and well de-fended. The invaders ultimately retired. St. Augustine had by this time grown to over. 3 3< c75
