A photograph of flat white sores in the mouth characteristic of secondary syphilis.

A photograph of flat white sores in the mouth characteristic of secondary syphilis, a contagious venereal disease primarily caused by the spirochaete Treponema pallidum. The sores usually occur around 3 weeks to 3 months after exposure. Secondary syphilis is the second stage of the disease. Approximately one-third of untreated individuals with primary syphilis will progress to the second stage. In secondary syphilis, the bacteria have spread in the bloodstream and have reached their highest numbers.
