A manual of marine engineering: comprising the design, construction, and working of marine machinery. e worked from themain engines, and haspipes, (fee, fitted, thatit may do the sameduties as the donkeyengines; and in theNavy, in addition tothis, the boilers can beemptied by it, insteadof being blown Board of Traderequire that one of thebilge-pumps shall be sofitted that it can pumpwater on deck in easeof fire. The engine-roompumps should have thenecessary piping, valves,&c., that water may bedrawn from each holdor ;rtment separ-ately, from each side ofthe engine and boilerrooms, and from anyother part of the shipliable to leakage orlodgment of water. In addition to the above-mentioned means of freeing the ship from water, it is usual to have a bilge suction, so that the circulating pump may be utilised. The chief danger to be apprehended when the circulating pump draws from the bilge is, that in cases of flooding of the eng ne compartment, the small coal is washed out of the bunkers, and soon chokes the condenser tubes as well as the pumps themselves, unless the. INJECTORS 346 rose boxes have sufficiently small holes to prevent it; and when the rose-box holes are so small as to prevent small coal passing through them, they soon choke, and render the pumps useless for the time. With acentiitugal circulating pump there is no danger of the pump choking orgetting out of order, and by having a direct discharge overboard, the con-denser cannot get choked. Donkey Pumps are now usually of the direct type—that is, the steampiston is connected direct to the water piston, and works without the inter-vention of a crank-shaft and flywheel. The steam distributing valve ofthese pumps is generally made to rfeciprocate by steam pressure acting onits ends alternately, and is known as a shuttle valve ; the steam to its endsis regulated by a small auxiliary valve operated by the pump-rod or thesteam piston i
