MONTREAL, Canada — A side chapel in Notre-Dame Basilica features a painting of Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys, the first teacher in Montreal and founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame. Bourgeoys, who established Montreal's first school in 1658, was canonized in 1982 for her pioneering work in early colonial education. The chapel serves as a tribute to her significant role in Montreal's Catholic and educational heritage.

The Notre-Dame Basilica's side chapel dedicated to Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys houses a significant painting commemorating one of New France's most important religious figures. Marguerite Bourgeoys (1620-1700) arrived in Montreal in 1653, establishing the city's first school five years later and founding the Congregation of Notre Dame, which became instrumental in the development of education throughout colonial New France. The chapel's artistic elements, including the painting, reflect the Gothic Revival style characteristic of the basilica's 1870s renovation by Victor Bourgeau. Bourgeoys, canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982, represents the first female saint from Canada, and her presence in the basilica underscores the deep connection between Montreal's religious and educational heritage. The chapel provides a space for reflection on her legacy as an educator, missionary, and builder of early Montreal, within the larger context of this historic church that draws millions of visitors annually.
