'Fall into water carefullly' sign, Bao Family Garden, Shexian, Anhui, China
The Bao Family Gardens in Anhui Province, China, is one of the largest and most famous family gardens in China. It is a typical Hui style garden that dates from its inception during the Ming (CE 1368-1644) Dynasty through to the Qing (1644-1911) Dynasty. Nowadays, it is best known for its potted landscapes of bonsai and miniscapes in different sizes and shapes. The potted landscape is one of the traditional Chinese arts. Plants and stones are arranged in a pot to form beautiful miniature landscapes. They are valued as "solid paintings" and "silent poetries". The art of miniaturization is termed penjiang while the finished product is called penzai (as in "a penzai tree", "a penzai landscape", etc.). In fact, the word "bonsai" is simply "penzai" rendered in the Japanese of the many old bonsai trees that have been carefully cultivated for many generations that can be seen in the Bao Family Garden, Shexian, Anhui Province, China. The pottery containers for the bonsai in this famous garden are also notable for variety and quality.
