Carleton Ellis (1876-1941), US chemist. Ellis studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later founded the Ellis Laboratories in Montclair, New Jersey. Ellis held hundreds of patents on his chemical research. One of his major discoveries was the synthesis of margarine from vegetable oils. He also held patents related to polyester and anti-knock petrol. His works include 'Synthetic Resins and their Plastics' (1923) and 'The Chemistry of Petroleum Derivatives' (1934). He was awarded the Franklin Institute's Edward Longstreth Medal in 1916. A tanker, the SS Carleton Ellis (launched 1943) was named after him.
