MODEL RELEASED. Ozone monitor. Meteorologist checking a Brewer spectrometer, a piece of equipment for monitoring the level of ozone (O3) in the air. Ozone in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) is a pollutant and a constituent of smog. However, in the upper atmosphere it has a protective effect, preventing the entry of UV and other high-energy radiation. The data acquired from the spectrometer are used to study the depletion of the polar ozone layer. Photographed at the Arctic Research Centre, Sodankyla, Finnish Lapland.
