The prevailing cold weather this winter and similar extremetemperature conditions last year, together with the observedgreat size and frequency of the spots now prevailing on thesun, suggest the theory that there is some physical connectionbetween these two phenomena. Yet it is quite erroneous to assume that the relative cool-ness of sun spots causes a lowering of our winter heat inthe United States. Students of this subject have, for severaldecades, found just enough connection between the action ofthe solar and the terrestrial forces to make them believe thatit is possible to work out the laws connecting them.
