American, " produced by the Dutch settlers, on the Hudson ; its name in low Dutch meanino; ; On all warm, rich, sandy soils it is one of the very finest fruits, and a good keeper. On cold clayey grounds it does not succeed well, as a general thing ; the past year, however, we have received of it gro\^^l on clay loam, limestone sub- soil, equalling or surpassing any ever grown on sand. On the rich prairie soils of the west, it is said to succeed^ proving a good bearer and profitable. Fruit, medium, to large ; form, roundish, slightly ribbed or un- equal on its surface and often a little angular; color, greenish yel- low at first, becoming a dull rich yellow, dotted with distinct brown specks, sometimes marbled with gray russet on the side and round the stem, and often tinged with dull red ; stem, slender ; cavity round, deep; calyx, small, half closed, hasin, shallow, somewhat plaited; fiesh, yellowish, fine grained, juicy, tender, spicy aromatic perfume; core, small, to medium ; seeds, broad, ovate.
