IVF sperm selection. Technician using a microscope to select sperm cells for use in in vitro fertilisation (IVF). IVF is performed when a couple want children but cannot conceive naturally. The sperm cells are visible on the monitors at upper left. The healthiest sperm cells will be selected for use in ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). In this technique, the egg cell (ovum) is held in place by a pipette and a sperm cell is injected into it using a microneedle. Once fertilised, the eggs cell is implanted into the woman's uterine lining. Usually several fertilised eggs are implanted to improve the chances of success.
