Radioactivity analysis. Researchers checking ionising radiation levels beside a river. The researcher at lower left is using a conductivity meter. The meter works by passing an electric current between two electrodes in the water. The presence of ionising radiation, comprising charged particles and gamma rays, causes the water's conductivity to increase. A researcher analysing a moss sample can be seen at centre right. He has various equipment including a Geiger counter on the table in front of him. Also seen is a researcher (centre) pipetting an exact volume of river water for analysis. Photographed at the Tinee River, France.
