Mountain andromeda stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a mountain andromeda (Pieris floribunda) plant. This is a drought plant (xerophyte). Xerophytes have developed characteristics to cut down water loss. The outer layer (pink) is a waxy cork cambium. Below this is a thick layer of xylem tissue (red) and at the centre is the vascular bundle. Magnification: unknown.
