Tuntz, after the injection of sulphindigotate into the veins ofpregnant rabbits, recognized the reagent in the liquor amnii by its blue coloring-matter, while there was no trace of it in the fetal kidneys. Experiments withother substances—e. g., iodin, salicylic acid, and potassium ferrocyanid—havebeen made. Chloroform administered to the mother in labor has been demon-strated later in the umbilical circulation, so that it probably exerts an an-esthetic influence on the fetus.
