The lever D, operating the foot valve B,should be connected, by suitable means, to the cab, sothat it may be under control of the engineer. A thin 684 LOCOMOTIVE APPLIANCES. sheet steel partition is inserted into the old sand pipes, extending from the dome down to the Huff device, forming a junction with a bridge in the device; this isto facilitate blowing out possible obstructions in thesand delivery pipes, as will be referred to later. Eachof the two feed tubes F contains an air adjustingtube H, which, in turn, contains in one end the bridge. Fig. Parts, Huff Pneumatic Track Sander. E, in the opposite end the adjusting screw /, andbetween them the ball valve J and the spring K, Thistube H is kept from turning in the feed tube F by theset screw M. The body A is fitted with a foot valve B, forming its floor, and so connected, as has alreadybeen said, that it can be worked from the cab. Thestem of this foot valve B passes out through the nut C, and is encircled by the spring L, which tends to LOCOMOTIVE APPLIANCES. 685 keep the foot valve normally closed. When thedevice is being used as a double sander the slots inthe feed tubes F should face each other. When inuse as a single sander one tube may be revolveduntil its slot is blanked against the wall of bodyA; the tubes F may be firmly held in any positionby the hectagon nut G.
