YMCA restaurant circa 1900. The Young Men's Christian Association was founded in London in 1844 by Sir George Williams in response to the "unhealthy social conditions" (such as gambling and drinking) arising in cities at the end of the Industrial Revolution. The YMCA attempted to combat idleness among young workers through Bible studies and prayer meetings. The first YMCA started in Boston in 1851, and although thousands of women worked in YMCA canteens, they were not admitted to full membership in the YMCAs until after World War II.
