Scabies-affected skin. Light micrograph of a section through skin affected by the mite (Acarus siro). Scabies is a contagious skin disease brought about the Acarus mite which burrows under the skin where it lays its eggs. When the eggs (oval pink) hatch out the small mites (oval thick walled) burrow through the skin causing eruption owing to severe itching at night which leads to secondary infection and often results in impetigo. Magnification: x37 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
