Vintage portrait print circa 1766 of William Pitt The Elder (1708 - 1778), 1st Earl of Chatham - British Prime Minister 1766 - 1768. He is known as Pitt "The Elder" to distinguish him from his son of the same name and was also known as The Great Commoner because of his refusal to accept a title until 1766. Although Pitt The Elder was only PM for two years he was a dominant figure in British politics in the mid 18th century. Print based on an engraving by Richard Houston (c1721 - 1775).
