Richard crossed the Atlantic in the year 1641, accompanying Sir William Berkeley, Governor of Virginia, in the capacity of secretary. He settled in the colony, and in due course his descendants multiplied. Early in the eighteenth century one of them, Thomas Lee, became governor, and built the family mansion named Stratford in the county of Westmoreland, the county of the Fairfaxes and Washingtons. Another descendant, Richard Henry, towards the end of that same century, presented a remarkable 256.
